Dona Kiriella, a Sri Lankan-born painter, and printmaker, embarked on a fascinating artistic journey that traversed continents and cultures, perfectly blending her rich Asian heritage with the influences of her new home in New York. Born and raised in Sri Lanka, Kiriella’ s artistic flair was evident early on. She seriously pursued her passion for art at the University of Visual & Performing Arts in Colombo. She graduated in 1994 with a Bachelor’s in sculpture and painting and a Master of philosophy in History of Art.

Her art frequently revolves around themes of Christianity, with a powerful series centered on the Crucifixion of Christ portrayed in her early exhibitions. She opened her creativity and skills to the public with two solo exhibitions while she was still an undergraduate. She had her first solo in 1993. She portrayed her ardent Christian upbringing with her works mainly focusing on the Crucifixion of Christ at the Lionel Wendt Art Centre, Colombo under the title of “St Joseph Vas Missionary Odyssey”. This was followed with her second solo in 1994 at the Gallery 706, Colombo, titled “Heart of the Matter” presenting vivid aspects of the crucifixion of Christ.

In 1995, Kiriella migrated to New York, where she furthered her academic career with a Master’s in printmaking from City University of New York, Lehman College. Guided by prominent American Printmaker Herman Zaag, she strongly embraced printmaking as a medium of expression at the Art & Cultural Centre Lab in Staten Island.

Inspired by the vibrant artistic community in New York, Kiriella held three efficacious exhibitions: “Moving with the Past,” “Melting Pot,” and “Forever in New York.” These fascinating showcases beautifully blended her Asian sentiments with American-European inspirations, perfectly reflecting her sprouting identity as a passionate artist.

Despite her international pursuits, Dona Kiriella upheld a solid connection to her homeland. In 2016, she actively participated in the renowned exhibition “THE FIVE” at J.D.A Perera Art Gallery in Colombo, presenting her latest works and engaging with fellow art enthusiasts.
